Test sticks for the semi-quantitative determination of the total hardness (Ca2+, Mg22+), carbonate hardness (HCO3-, CO32-) and the pH value of aquarium water. The total hardness of a water is caused by its content of calcium and magnesium salts (Ca2+, Mg2+). When measuring the total hardness, the sum of these salts is determined. The carbonate hardness is a part of the total hardness and is caused by that portion of alkaline earth metals which are equivalent to the carbonate and hydrogen carbonate ions (CO32-, HCO3-) the buffer properties of the water. Water with a low carbonate hardness is not sufficiently buffered, therefore the pH value can fluctuate easily. The pH value indicates whether the water is acidic, alkaline or neutral. Water with a pH of 7 is called neutral. Towards lower pH values the water becomes increasingly acidic, towards higher pH values it becomes more alkaline.
Gradation: Carbonate Hardness: 0 · 4 · 8 · 13 · 19 · 25 °e / pH: 6.4 · 6.8 · 7.2 · 7.6 · 8.0 · 8.4 / Total Hardness: 0 · 6.3 · 12.5 · 18.8 · 25.0 · 31.3 °e
Color change: Carbonate Hardness: bright green → blue / pH: yellow → red / Total Hardness: green → red
